Homemade Cranberry Margarita Mix

I recently made a homemade margarita mix as I really don't like the fake taste of the store bought ones – I had a bunch of wild low bush cranberries left so that made choosing a flavour easy. The cranberry mix is tangy, vibrant and pairs wonderfully with tequila blanco.

Cranberry jam

Make the cranberry jam up to 5 days in advance.

INGREDIENTS:

1 ½ cup fresh cranberries

½ cup light agave nectar or sugar

¼ cup fresh orange juice

2 teaspoons orange zest (from 1 to 2 oranges)

INSTRUCTIONS: Make the jam: In a medium saucepan, bring cranberries, agave (or sugar), orange juice and ½ cup water to boil. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thick and jammy, about 20 to 25 minutes. Remove from heat, stir in the orange zest and set aside to cool.

To Make a Single Margarita

1/2 cup homemade margarita mix

¼ cup tequila

1 tablespoon Cointreau

Ice

Lime wedges

Salt for rim

Instructions:

Run a lime wedge around the rim of a glass, dip into salt and fill with ice.

To a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add tequila, lime juice, Cointreau and margarita mix.

Shake well and pour over glass filled with ice.
